Strategic Goals Program (SGP)

As one of the largest manufacturers of access control systems and security hardware, Stanley Security Solutions has taken its position of leadership seriously. And that means taking the reins as a leader in safety, health and environmental concerns as well.

Stanley has taken the higher road of focusing on ways that are "smarter, safer, better." We've opened our eyes and taken a less selfish viewpoint, one that is more encompassing of the world we live in. The living proof of our commitment is all around us: cleaner air, land and water; safer, healthier work environments for our employees; and happier, energized employees.

You can see our commitment to health, safety and the environment in the policies and practices we have adopted as daily operating procedure. Our specific environmental protection strategies include; toxic chemical elimination, process change, equipment modification, reclamation and reuse, energy efficiency technologies, recycling, and the smart use of material resources. While our safety and health activities include: maintaining equipment, tools and machines in good repair; developing safe work methods; providing wellness education; and empowering employees to take responsibility for their own safety by giving them the freedom to shape their own work environment.

Through the efforts of management and employees working together, the following outstanding accomplishments have been made that recognize Stanley for its outstanding leadership in these areas:

  • 1992-1995 voluntarily participated in the Governor's Toxic Reduction Program. We met the goal by achieving greater than 50% reduction of toxic chemical use in our operations.
  • 1994 and 1995 received the Indiana Manufacturers Association Safety Award for "Outstanding Safety Performance."
  • 1995 was honored with the Governor's Award for Excellence in Pollution Prevention by voluntarily going beyond traditional treatment, control and disposal techniques and focusing instead on reducing the toxic materials or generation of environmental waste.
  • 1996 and 1997 received a pollution prevention grant from the state of Indiana to research alternatives to Chromium electroplating.
  • 1998 voluntarily accepted the Indiana Governor's Toxic Reduction Challenge to support the reduction of toxic emissions in Indiana.
  • 1998 signed on to the National Metal Finishing Strategic Goals Program (SGP), a unique cooperative effort between the USEPA and the metal finishing industry, to achieve seven National Performance Goals that represent "better than compliance" environmental performance by 2002.
  • 1999 and 2000 received Commendation of Excellence Safety Award presented by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce for showing successful safety and health initiatives in the workplace and for the positive results achieved to protect the worker by eliminating hazards.
  • 2000 achieved 100% completion of five (5) of seven (7) SGP goals for the reduction of Water Usage, Energy, Organic Emissions, Metals Emissions, and Human Exposure to Toxic Materials. Achieved 99% completion of the other two (2) SGP goals for reduction of Sludge Generation and Metals Utilization.
  • 2000 designated by the State of Indiana as a Partner for Pollution Prevention for ongoing support and contributions to IDEM's Office of Pollution Prevention and Technical Assistance.
  • 2001 received the EPA Chemical Emergency Prevention and Preparedness Partnership Award presented by U.S. EPA to the Industry Partners for Safety Awareness (Stanley is a principal member) in recognition of significant efforts toward preparedness, prevention and response programs. This award is part of our Good Neighbor Pledge which is a program of the Marion County Hazardous Materials Planning Committee.
  • 2002 received the Green Cross for Safety Excellence Achievement Award presented by the National Safety Council for recognition of outstanding efforts in occupational safety performance.
  • 2002 received the Indiana 5-Star Environmental Recognition Program for Metal Finishers - "3-Stars Awarded" presented by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) for going beyond compliance with state and local environmental regulations by reducing Water, Energy, Organic Emissions, Metals Emissions, Human Exposure to Toxic Materials, Sludge Generation and improving in Metals Utilization as part of the National Strategic Goals Program.

Bottom line, we're always on the lookout for new, innovative ways to minimize our impact on the environment, improving work place safety and health while producing quality products and employing quality people. Our commitment to be the best continues; because when everybody cares, everyone wins.
